An Open Thread?

I'm willing to take a shot talking our way through the DNC, even if it's just the three of us. Let's do it!

Hillary better kick ass. Lots of it.

wobblie said...

I'm in. Let's rock it.

wobblie said...

And why didn't Schweitzer deliver the keynote?

CPS said...

Well--I was thinking of turning in, but hanging out with you guys--who could turn that down. Let's swap strategies!

Has anyone seen Lex on the floor?

dave3544 said...

Songs by men about women.

wobblie said...

No Lex sightings yet. But he's probably not wearing a funny hat.

dave3544 said...

Damn good candidate bio. Like the Obama worked in. Thought it was interesting that he was in more shots than Bill.

wobblie said...

Okay, the musical director needs to be shot.

CPS said...

You mean "Hillary's husband"?

What is the music?

wobblie said...

It's crap.

wobblie said...

Straight to the point, eh?

dave3544 said...

Actually the time to unite was February, but okay...

dave3544 said...

I'm done with the "I'll never forget the poor shlub who I met once for 30 seconds and will now exploit" schtick.

wobblie said...

You've got two more months of that, my friend.

wobblie said...

Actually, I'll amend that - a lifetime of that.

dave3544 said...

Producer: Can we get an out-of-focus pan on camera three? Yeah, that's good. Let's go back to that later.

E. said...

Speaking of exploitation, Michelle Obama's video made me cry, which I thought was an acceptable reaction. Now Hillary Clinton's video has made me cry, which makes me question my resolve against being manipulated by the newly well-oiled dem machine of hope.

wobblie said...

I like the "were you in it" lines.

mike3550 said...

Now I'm remembering why she didn't win the nomination...

dave3544 said...

Except NAFTA. Fucked us on NAFTA, didn't you Bill?

E. said...

Yeah, this delivery is not sincere enough to elicit any more tears. It's as though a high-schooler 20 years from now is wearing a blonde wig and a pantsuit, reciting this for a school project. I guess we'll see.

mike3550 said...

She needs to wrap it up -- Jon Stewart's on in one minute on the east coast.

wobblie said...

e.! It beats being manipulated by Spielberg!

wobblie said...

Stop it with the fucking honorable lines! Agh!

CPS said...

This comment thread needs a woman!

mike3550 said...

Wait, wait, wait...did Amy Poehler just get on the stage?

I could have sworn she did.

TWINS!

wobblie said...

cps, meet e. Hear her roar.

E. said...

i am pretty sure i qualify as a woman.

dave3544 said...

She is not hitting McCain hard.

If that's it, then WTF?

E. said...

Chels looks bored out of her skull.

CPS said...

sorry--thought that was EZ--my bad!

CPS said...

although my visual of EZ crying is ruined!

E. said...

dave, it's because Hillary and McCain are *friends.* Her words.

dave3544 said...

Now I'm crying.

Who wrote this speech? Did a high school (h/t to e.) write this goddamn speech?

dave3544 said...

Ummmm...pap.

dave3544 said...

Olberman. Love it.

mike3550 said...

@Dave,

My vote's on Mark Penn.

wobblie said...

Stick around for the punditocracy?

E. said...

curses, why were we watching this on public television! i should have thought of olbermann. just switched to msnbc.

wobblie said...

For those of us who don't have cable, we'll need more than just "Olberman"!

mike3550 said...

(Mark Penn wrote the speech) - y'all need comment numbers on this blog.

mike3550 said...

Did Chris Matthew's just get out of a pool filled with nothing but chlorine?

wobblie said...

Holy shit, Bobo agrees with me that the "were you in it for me" line was good. Reconsidering everything.

E. said...

although i guess this means we have to also listen to chris "locomotion, if you will...." "democrat is a very important word" matthews

dave3544 said...

'Course. I've got three hours until the Daily Show.

IN case my previous comment made no sense to those not watching MSNBC, Olberman's first words after the speech were "Knocked it out of the park. Home run. Couldn't have done better."

mike3550 said...

Great speech? Wtf Chris Matthews? "I always want to start with a summary because I used to do this for a living"

Is he admitting not doing real news anymore?

dave3544 said...

Matthews is touting the "twins" line, which I thought was a groaner.

mike3550 said...

Yay! Rachel Maddow!

wobblie said...

The PBS crowd is pretty gaga over the speech as well.

dave3544 said...

Buchanan is going to go with his "she didn't really attack McCain, so she doesn't really want Barack to win" schtick.

E. said...

gents, i have to get up very early tomorrow for a full day of compelling companies to enter secret agreements. :) awesome job as usual, team organizing grievances! way fun!

dave3544 said...

I do love it when the media spends four months digging up every single "PUMA" supporter and constantly bringing up any tension between HRC and BHO, only to find that maybe these feelings weren't really so strong. And then blaming "big money people" who "maybe" were heard too much.

Jeeeebus.

Glad to see everyone working off the same talking points.

wobblie said...

This guy from Brandeis on PBS is sharp - the Clintons want to keep their leverage in the party, and if they're seen as having any part should Obama lose, they're toast.

dave3544 said...

night e., thanks for joining us!

dave3544 said...

If Richardson had mentioned he was a pitcher during the "gay debate," he might be the VP nominee.

wobblie said...

Yeah, it seems like they're trying to pivot away from the PUMA story to the "unity" line. I think we'll see if that narrative's dead and buried for sure on Thursday.

ash said...

hey, ya'll.

dave3544 said...

And with that, I give you this and take my leave.

wobblie said...

Holy crap! My non-cable bleeds CNN through!

dave3544 said...

ASH!

wobblie said...

Ash!

wobblie said...

Dave is aware of all internet traditions.

ash said...

i think maybe i just got played, because i thought HRC did a good job with this.

wobblie said...

And, on cue, CNN rolls the McCain ad featuring the Hillary quotes from primary season.

dave3544 said...

Can I return after a Rick Roll?

Fuck it.

This is why we need to hear from Ash. What did you like? Let's face it, I'm not the target audience for the "I am woman, hear me roar" stuff.

wobblie said...

I've seen her more passionate, and I think she pulled some punches, but in terms of affecting what the media says, it seems to have been effective.

ash said...

yeah, but her supporters did need to hear that. they were the target audience.

wobblie said...

Carville called Hill's effort Koufax-esque (not surprisingly), but they're all saying they've never seen a more gracious runner-up speech.

ash said...

i think that was about as passionate as she's capable of. she almost even seemed sincere. and i'm no hillary fan, so the fact that i bought it says something, i think...

dave3544 said...

Alright. Fingers hurt. I'll keep reading though.

Obama was at a Billings "house party." Must have been off the hizzy.

wobblie said...

Maybe it's the whole tv/in person thing - the energy doesn't necessarily transmit well. I do, however, think she was sincere, and totally agreed, that speech was aimed at her partisans, and they needed to hear it.

wobblie said...

Obama apparently loved the "No way, no how, no McCain" line. Not my fave.

ash said...

agreed. but i am embarrassed to admit that i liked the twins line.

wobblie said...

Ok y'all, I've got to get up to work in the AM. Will we be reconvening for some hot Biden action tomorrow?

ash said...

i'll be here. biden needs to do something serious to win me over.

CPS said...

Parenting called me away last night but let me push the OG into the over 75 comments on a post category by saying that I agree with Ash and Wobs (although I surely would have been called out for carrying the Co. Water had I said that last night). I am not sure how that speech could have been much more than it was. True it wasn't memorable (but that is probably preferable--think about what kind of speech would have been). I suppose it could have been more edgy and attacking, but from where I sit that is for tonight and the guy who got the job.

So I thought it was "fine" for a speech that was so rhetorically hemmed in.

sidenote: Can't you all add Twitter and have LD weigh in from the floor?

wobblie said...

That would require Lex to know WTF Twitter is, which I'm not sure he does.

dave3544 said...

My understanding is that electronic access from the floor is not easy.
