RNC open thread

Here's tonight's schedule, with the theme being reform ("Washington is broken and the Original Maverick will fix it"). I'm sure that'll work out for them. The fireworks will be in the 10 PM EDT hour when Sarah Palin will attempt to convince us that being a corrupt Alaskan machine politician is actually a good thing.

Bon appetit!

I'll be back to play after the kid goes to bed, probably just before 9ish.

CPS said...

Seen this? Republican strategy to make all Palin stories just tabloid fodder or potential real story? Shorter version: crap, not crap?

wobblie said...

I think the story is most likely crap, but I think that it feeds in to the Republican strategy of making all Palin stories tabloid fodder. How's that for splitting the difference?

CPS said...

That background screen is CRAZY AMERICAN!

wobblie said...

Nothing says drill baby drill like the image of an unspoiled wilderness.

Chuck Rob on MSNBC is admiring the fact that the GOR has scheduled the convention so that there is no break between Guluiani, the Palin video and Palin's speech, so that the evil media can't intervene with "commentary" (or what you and I might think of as "correcting the lies."

He fucking loves that the GOP are cutting him out of the loop because he completely buys the idea that the media -- himself! -- is non-objective.

wobblie said...

MITTENS!

dave3544 said...

I am being told that it is sexist to assert that Obama has more experience than Palin. Because she has "executive experience."

CPS said...

MITTENS!!!

CPS said...

Damn--and Neats was just making fun of me for writing that!

wobblie said...

The sun is about to rise from Arizona and Alaska... but conspicuously not California.

dave3544 said...

At the DNC, it was hard to hear the crowd, which made some of the speeches sound weird.

--Mitt, the sun rises in the east no matter who is governor of Alaska --

Having a hall where you can hear each and every jackass "whoop" is worse.

wobblie said...

Wow... someone missed out on that whole 1994-2006 thing, huh?

ash said...

interests of the teacher's unions above the interests of students!

oh, and: hi!

dave3544 said...

I believe Mitt just called George a "big government liberal."

lex dexter said...

thank you mitt for the "Teachers' Union" shout-out!

wobblie said...

I love it when Republican's paraphrase the labor theory of value.

wobblie said...

Homes without pornography?!? Mittens wants to ban the internets!!1!!1!

ash said...

love the baby and kid montage after the family values line.

CPS said...

big brother?!?! who is wire tapping this conversation right now?

wobblie said...

The party of Big Brother... hmmm... might want to rethink that one.

lex dexter said...

I think Mitt thinks he's having a "Reagan '76" moment.

dave3544 said...

Really is it 1992?

Wouldn't "Adam Smith on steroids" be awesome to a free marketeer?

How can a fucking Republican be against real estate speculation? Isn't the the free fucking market?

wobblie said...

But, conspicuously, not George Bush 8 years ago.

lex dexter said...

Sweet Christ - "the tyrannosaurus appetite of government unions."

dave3544 said...

Al Gore joke. Boom!

wobblie said...

Uh yeah dude. They talked about actually finding bin Laden instead of going after people who didn't attack us.

lex dexter said...

Saddleback Reference!

dave3544 said...

USA!! USA!! USA!!

wobblie said...

Putin, Chavez, and A-jad! BOOM!

dave3544 said...

Mitt cannot give a speech. He really keeps fucking it up. Cut taxes, not hostages, no retreat.

dave3544 said...

Here comes the Michelle slagging.

dave3544 said...

USA!! USA!! USA!!

CPS said...

Inherited?

wobblie said...

We don't want your Mormon god's blessing Mitt, but thanks.

dave3544 said...

If it is up to God whether this noble little experiment in democracy lives or dies, then what the heck difference does it make who we elect president?

CPS said...

Um Wobs--that would be Gods'

lex dexter said...

and DAVE,
lay off my man chuck todd.

dave3544 said...

1 to 10 Mitt's speech. I give it a 5.

dave3544 said...

Chuck Todd is worse than your man Chris Matthews and that is saying something. Actually I hate Todd most of all.

CPS said...

what does 1 represent, and 10?

wobblie said...

For what is was supposed to do, which is fire up the base, I'd give it an 8. To appeal to Joe Schmo, who wasn't watching it anyways, a 5.

CPS said...

Bobo is boggled by Mitten's "right wing" speech

wobblie said...

Dear Mitt Romney's gods - please make the awkward white people dancing stop.

dave3544 said...

Shouldn't there be someone begging the conventioneers not to dance?

CPS said...

Bobo and Shields laughing about Mittens using the speech to start campaigning for 2012--it is really an odd sight.

dave3544 said...

Like diving, 10 is better than 1.

ash said...

Gergen just called Mittens' address "a great speech for the 1970s" and asked "what decade IS this???"

CPS said...

okay, that was a belly flop then--I give it a 4

dave3544 said...

For the record, Wayne Morse (R, I, D-Oregon) is the original maverick. He managed to actually vote against his party and president every now and again.

wobblie said...

CNN is really on the way McCain has turned on the "liberal media" frame. They seem somewhat surprised.

CPS said...

The Huckster!

dave3544 said...

I finally get to use the word "Hucktacular!" again.

wobblie said...

Break out the dog whistles, kids, it's Huck time!

CPS said...

Not Huckalicious?!

wobblie said...

My second choice. Swipe at Mittens!

dave3544 said...

Hucktacular!

wobblie said...

Apparently, we are no longer part of America, as we have failed to be unified for McCain by the "liberal media."

dave3544 said...

BOOM! Madonna concert. Hoo boy!

wobblie said...

Madonna?!? We ARE in the wrong decade!

wobblie said...

Polite applause for the black man.

ash said...

his color?

CPS said...

why do they keep saying they aren't Republicans?

wobblie said...

Avoiding economic proposals like the plague, eh?

wobblie said...

Bill and Ted reference? 80s!!!

dave3544 said...

Oh my. "Elevate our taxes and our risk."

They really are going for the taxes-terrorism linkage.

"opportunity to prosper" not unlike the "opportunity to have qualified counsel."

"European ides" Sweet Jesus.

wobblie said...

Europeans hate freedom.

CPS said...

you got to take showers?!

dave3544 said...

How many Republicans actually had fathers that worked with their hands?

dave3544 said...

IN the hall, that is.

ash said...

that silk stockings thing was creepy weird.

dave3544 said...

Anyone want to comment on the homemade signs?

Cheap line on Biden and not true.

ash said...

biden: zing!

CPS said...

she got almost votes as there are empty seats at this convention!

CPS said...

that would be "as many votes"

wobblie said...

John McCain was a POW? Who knew?

dave3544 said...

Was the "he did not choose the easy path" a swipe at Bush?

wobblie said...

Huh. That's the first time we've heard the word "torture" here.

Jason said...

Anyone want to comment on the homemade signs?

I don't believe they are homemade. They seem like the "homemade" signs at American Gladiators.

dave3544 said...

Was the "he did not choose the easy path" a swipe at Bush?

dave3544 said...

I love the awkward smiles and sign waving while Huck describes the lasting damage from McCain's torture.

dave3544 said...

Holy effing ess. That was the awesomest story ever!

Batshit. But Awesome.

wobblie said...

Soldiers earned the students desks? Huh.

wobblie said...

Students' desks = freedom.

ash said...

we're in iraq fighting for...desks

ash said...

holy shit, what a wingnut ending.

dave3544 said...

So, if McCain is elected, then free desks?

CPS said...

Anyone thinking about Wag the Dog and that Willie Nelson song about shoes? I am expecting a new hit about "the desk" tomorrow.

wobblie said...

New thread is posted, y'all.

mike3550 said...

I am quite literally at a loss of words...

ash said...

hey dave--i'm glad you brought up the homemade signs. don't remember seeing that at the DNC? what's the story with that?

dave3544 said...

This is the woman that said that saying Obama has more experience than Palin is sexist.

dave3544 said...

ash...see you on the new thread.
