Saturday 5

It's been awhile since we've done one of these, so let's have a little fun. Top five albums in your collection that are guilty pleasures. You know, the albums that you love that you would never, ever want the rest of us catch you listening to.

  • FutureSex/LoveSounds - Justin Timberlake: Nuff said.
  • Judgment Night - Soundtrack: This is the unholy lovechild of "120 Minutes" and "Yo! MTV Raps". The tracks on this album miss more than hit, but damn is it fun. The Mudhoney/Sir Mix-a-Lot collaboration "Freakmomma" is worth the price.
  • Up - REM: The lads minus Bill Berry start life anew as an art pop trio. They fail, sounding more like warmed-over Automatic for the People. Fortunately for me, I still like Automatic.
  • In Through The Out Door - Led Zeppelin: The last studio Zep album definitely does not rock, but I still love it.
  • Flash Gordon Soundtrack - Queen: C'mon, tell me you don't love, "Flash! Ah aaaaaah!"

You may point and laugh in comments, so long as we can point and laugh at you.

No reason to be ashamed of listening to Futuresex/Lovesounds. Anybody who tells you different needs to reach past the whiny alternapop.

Well, it's not Saturday any more and I only came up with four, but here goes:

Mama Mia! - soundtrack. Yes, I have -- and I love -- the soundtrack from the musical. The funny thing is, I'm not even an Abba fan. I just adored the musical, which I've seen twice, in NYC and Toronto. (And yes, I will be going to see the movie, even though it will probably suck by any objective standards. And I will probably love it anyway, cuz I'm all sappy like that.)

Either/Or - Elliott Smith. It's not that I think I should be embarrassed by my love for this album, it's just that (a) part of me feels like I should have gotten over or outgrown it and (b) it was, for a long while, my favorite thing to listen to on walks, which meant it got played a lot. When I got my new iPod, before I had time to transfer all my music over, S. loaded this one album for me and handed it to me on the way out the door. He said, "this is all I had time to copy, but I figured it was all you needed." That's when I knew it was time to find some new walking music. But I still sneak a listen every now and then when I am out and about.

Exile in Guyville - Liz Phair. I don't know why, but I still love listening to this every now and again...

Tigermilk - Belle & Sebastian. Yeah, that's right. I listen to Belle & Sebastian. A couple of you have made it clear that this is something I should be ashamed of, but I like them. There, I said it.

Only four?!? That's what we call repression! C'mon, ash, which Huey Lewis album is it?

I'm pretty sure I own more than five hip hop albums that could easily be considered embarrassing in normal company. I'll offer up just two:

Crunk Juice - Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz

Back by Thug Demand - Trick Daddy Dollars

I know it is wrong of me to think that I am learning anything about "urban" youth by listening to these songs, but I do so enjoy picking up on ideas and modes of life completely outside of my own experiences. For instance, did you know there's some controversy about whether Pyrex dishes can be considered kosher?

Then there's my extensive "greatest hits" album collection of bad late 70s early 80s rock bands, of which I will offer two:

The Very Best of Supertramp - Supertramp

Records - Foreigner

Albums of my youth. They are not good. I still do enjoy them.

And lastly, I don't buy many cds anymore, at least not for myself. If I want to listen to something, I tend to buy it for Ging and get points that way. In the category of cds I bought for Ging so I can listen to them, I offer:

The Dutchess - Fergie
Obviously, her songs are catchy as hell and I love the way that each song seems to really be three different songs in one. I also enjoy the fact the lyrics don't really seem to make any sense or flow together or even belong in the same song. It's a lot like the altrock, except that you don't have to pretend like you're deep because you get it.

like ash a lot of the things i'm embarrassed of loving are indie rock classics that i somehow feel like i should be over by now. really i'm most embarassed by the "alt-country" music i like, because my own biography - indie wanker/gram parsons fan moves to the deep south, blows own mind - makes it seem so OBVIOUS a thing.

i think people are embarassed FOR me when it comes to the Ryan Adams stuff. in particular, the Terrapin-worshiping "Cold Roses" makes a lotta peeps sick to their stomach.

also i avoided the Drive-by Truckers for years for fear that i might dig 'em, and sure enough _Brighter Than Creation's Dark_ is in my top 5 for 2008, so far.

i've been enjoying the shite out of the Lemonheads' _It's a Shame About Ray_, an album that I forcefully made myself "too cool" for by the time I was 15.

i also will vigorously defend latter-day Sonic Youth albums like _Nurse_ that many tastemakers have deemed "boring."

oh, and Ash - "Boy With the Arab Strap," "Tigermilk" and the other early one (red cover?) were really important stabilizing tools during a volatile and overindulgent period of, uh, chemical explorations. so i'll belly up and admit that i, too, am a B+S fan.

well I'm on the Ryan Adams bandwagon with lex but a few other shamefuls for me would be:

"Pass the Flask" - the Bled

Lets not look into this too deeply, I was pissed and young.. I'm still pretty young.

"I'm Wide Awake its Morning" -Bright Eyes

All I can say is I'm glad I didn't get that tatoo I was thinking about from the lyrics to a song in this album.

"Plans" - Death Cab for Cutie

I was in high school, I lived in the Seattle area, cut me a break. I will still sit down and try and convince myself that this album "speaks" to me when I hear it on the radio.

and definately, the Flash Gordon soundtrack!!! How bout that entire movie? wow is all I can say! A fine piece of cinema, played by a fine piece of musical talent.

You know what the best part of coming up with this list was? Going through my CDs and finding all the albums I'm not embarrassed about.

AC/DC's Greatest Hits? Awesome.
Diamond Dave-era Van Halen albs? Awesome.
Thriller? Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I just want to say that I am now shocked to find out that I and supposed to be embarrassed for liking Ryan Adams who I came to late and love--including, dare I say, especially, Cold Roses. Damn I hate being behind the times!

cps - you don't need to be embarrassed if you're okay with admitting you have emotions. I, myself, will stick to accusing women of being cold as ice and asking if we can have kippers for breakfast.
