What is measure 64, anyway?
measure 64 is one of 12 ballot initiatives/constitutional referenda facing oregonians this november.
it is an affront to a particular aspect of "union security" - the ability of public employees to have political contributions deducted directly from their employer's payroll. union dues are typically deducted from the employer payroll, as has been the case in most states since the New Deal.
this particular ballot initiative is expected to fail, but it will be necessary for the oregon labor movement to devote millions of dollars before defeating it. these dollars could be put towards many other necessary endeavors, were it not for a small cadre of libertarian, "conservative-populist " activists, funders and consultants.
to the extent that oregonians face anywhere from 6-14 ballot initiatives on average in addition to the other elections, you can understand how political parties' influence, their organization breadth, and their "brands" are flanked to the left by the unions, and to the right by the aforementioned libertarian chaps.
