I don't think of Spinal Tap as a "1984" movie because I didn't see it until much later. It wasn't foundational to my youth in the same ways as Red Dawn, Karate Kid, Police Academy, Romancing the Stone, Revenge the Nerds, well you get the idea, were. Each one of these movies shaped and formed who I am today. The Tap is a great movie. Invented a whole genre. But, for me, it is just for giggles.
That said, the OG family is a younger crowd and I recognize that. For many of you Tap was a foundational experience and the movie is an all-time classic. All hail Spinal Tap!
This poll also reveled that while we love Prince's music, we'd rather not have to watch him act. Or "act," if you will. Purple Rain the movie did give us one important thing, however, Morris Day and the Time. Some say that Day's unceasing support of Walter Mondale was the only thing that kept Reagan from capturing all 50 states. For that we owe Purple Rain a heartfelt thanks.

New Poll - Best Album of 1984
Posted by
dave3544
Public Enemy once famously asked "Who gives a fuck about a goddamn Grammy?" Well, I'd venture to reckon that the nominees for 1984 Album of the Year did.
At the side you'll find a poll asking you to choose the best album of 1984 as nominated by Grammy voters and the purchasers of record albums that fine year.
I don't want to influence your votes, but it will be interesting to see if any Culture Clubbers are reading the OG these days.
Also, because we have so many choices, definitely feel free to vote early and often.

Obama wins!
Okay first off, who were the two people that were predicting an Obama defeat? (One person changed their vote). I like the idea that we have secret doubters partolling the blog. You are welcome here.
Second off, I kind of feel like this is an episode of the McLaughlin Group and you've all given me your predictions. Here's where I say, "The correct answer is..."
Greater than 330 is the right answer. Current projections have Obama at 351. Everything is breaking Obama. In the 20th century, the winner of the election has averaged 402.6.
As much as I hate to say it, I think we're going to do this thing!

New Poll -- Obama Domination

New "poll" on the right.
Less a poll than a test of the power of collective predictive abilities. According to a book I read, we should all be able to contribute our little bits of knowledge to paint a larger, more accurate picture.
Let's get on it!

Poll Results -- Hillary Proves Divisive
Posted by
dave3544
Once again, Hillary Clinton has proved to be the most divisive figure in the history of American politics. Not since Alexander "That No Good Son of Bitch" Hamilton graced the American scene has the American political world, as represented by the readers of this blog, been so torn.
Now, I am not suggesting that a former VP should shoot her, far from it, (although one does wonder if Quayle has any other way of getting back into the history books, which raises the side point of "what the hell is Dan Quayle up to these days?" I didn't see him in St. Paul. Does he not get invited to these things?) no, far from it.
People managed to tally nine votes suggesting that Hillary is out there every goddamn day busting her hump for this Obama guy who is totally inexperienced and is making more mistakes than a person who makes a lot of mistakes, but Hillary is a soldier who carries on in the name of all that is good and pure and clean in this world, despite the sexism that so pervades our society that not even her appeals to voters' racism could overcome it.
Three people voted for the middle ground option, choosing to say that Hillarty is working quietly behind the scenes. A bold choice, as it pretty much means that these voters are behind the scenes themselves, as they would have no other way to know this was true. All I can say is, welcome heavyweights!
Nine people have a morerealistic cynical view of this crazy world, seeing in Hillary's complete absence from the American political scene in the last few months a sign that she'd much rather have a clear path to the nomination herself in 2012 than help Obama secure the presidency. Sure she gave a semi-good speech at the convention, but as far as being a partisan attack dog, she is failing big time.
Only one person acknowledged my side-splitting joke about the SNL bit. Side-splitting, yes, but also a fine example of the kinds of things Hillary could be saying, but for some strange reason isn't.
No one selected "told you so," possibly in protest against my uneditable grammar error. I'd apologize, but instead I choose to believe that you all find my mistakes charming. Maybe we could do a poll.

New Poll -- Where's Hillary? Edition
Posted by
dave3544
Assuming that our colleague EZ is buried under a blizzard of "Add" requests, I'll throw up a poll designed to get his attention.
Where is Hillary? One of the anticipated storylines when McCain announced Palin was Hillary tearing her apart. The GOP was going to put up a lightweight and our "oh-so-close" champ was supposed to destory her so that Obama-Biden could focus on more important things, like backing away from pledges to raise taxes on the wealthy and asking parapeligics to take a bow.
Take your best guess at the whereabouts of our "totally awesome, but not quite presidental material, but totally not because she's a woman, pitbull in a pantsuit" at the right.

Number of readers who openly admit to breaking the eighth commandment: 4 -- 20 Hail Marys
Number of readers who admit to breaking the eighth commandment, but with shame in their hearts: 7 -- 10 Hail Marys

Number of readers who cop to the sin of ignorance: 2 -- 4 Our Fathers
Number of readers who walk the righteous path, but will enevitably fall because no person is without sin, might we mention pride?: 3 -- 1 Our Father

New Poll -- Borrowing Without Asking!
Posted by
dave3544
Hey all,
Go ahead and give us some feedback in the new poll up on the right. I'm looking to take the temperature of the OGians on illegal media downloads. I have a feeling we will have a diversity of opinion not seen since we all weighed in on the Biden pick (good times, I remember them fondly).
I also ask because I recently stepped up my downloading (or 'renting, as some would have it), as I missed the first half of the new Battlestar season and have no interest in waiting for it to come out on DVD, amongst other things. My daughter got wind of this and was all over my gravy about it. What do you all think, should I amend my ways, get back on the straight and narrow, wait a year to pay $79 for some BSG action?
Poll results will published Monday, so vote today!

EZ Polling Results!
Posted by
EZ
The results are in and they look tasty....

72% of OGnians (that participated) think that Biden is NOT CRAP. Any future references to him, the choice, VPs, and MNBA as crap will be laughingly out of touch with popular opinion, and will be subject to mockery and snark.
Note: would the 2 voters that indicated that they do not participate in opinion polls please contact me, I have a questionnaire I would like you to complete. It only takes a couple hours. I am working on a survey of nonrespondents, but have had trouble with my sample size.
The anticipation for next week's poll is building...see you tomorrow.

The Silent Majority
Posted by
EZ
The first ever poll of OGnian thought is closed and I will now present the results:

What does this mean? First, will polls continue? since a whopping 19.6% of visitors to the site expressed a willingness to endure polls, they will continue.
81% of visitors (I have used the average visits per day for the past week) did not vote. They are well known as "the silent majority."
The will of the silent majority is clear from this poll; They want LAW and ORDER. The polling staff (EZ) interprets this to mean that Obama will pick Biden. (The fact that this already happened is iron-clad proof that this is a valid poll)
As the pentograph clearly shows, we should be moving, "forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom." Kodos 1996
For those waiting with much anticipation the announcement of the next poll, it will be text messaged to you (or just posted on the site) by 3 am tomorrow.

OGnian opinion polling?
Posted by
EZ
I would like to announce the roll out of a new "recurring" feature to the OG. This site weighs in on some of the most pressing ideas and issues of the day (and night), and I think it would be helpful to be able to "boil down" or "distill" the opinion of OGnians as a group. We could then know for sure whether we can refer to France as crap...etc.
Towards this end, You may notice (momentarily) a poll on the right side of the page. Please add your opinion to the "pile."
Wait you say, polling sucks. You are probably right, but so do mean people and yet they still exist.
What are the rules? There are no rules. vote early, vote often, encourage your friends and family to do likewise.
I will post a new poll every (sure I will) Sunday (as it is my day off) and close the poll by Saturday, leaving sat. afternoon to "digest" the results before the craziness begins all over again on Sunday.
As you may have noticed the first poll will determine if this is truly recurring or not.
